AN APPLE A DAY

Studio: Collaborative Personal Project
Photographer: Ashley Seryn
Model: Hana Tyszka

--

Driven by nostalgia, these fresh-cut apples challenge what we all heard as kids: don’t play with your food. By creating intricate and unique designs for each apple (and organizing a photoshoot around them),  we pushed the idea of “playing with your food” to something more extreme; in doing so, we hope to encourage food as a playground for creativity.

MORE THAN YOU’LL EVER KNOW (SUSHI MOSAIC)

Studio: Personal Work
Client: Seaglass Lens Magazine
Featured at: Such As, Gallery

--

Collaboration with Nhi (@onehillion), Heymugi (@heymugi), and Sea Glass Lens (@seaglasslensmag) for the Nautilus Diaries edition of the Seaglass Lens Magazine,
a printed ocean inspired art book.

This piece playfully (or perhaps morbidly) references the ocean theme of Sea Glass Lens Magazine through sushi as my medium. Beyond the humor, however, it reflects my fascination with the comfort of childhood. In this work, I focused on thoughtfully designed bento box lunches as my object of nostalgia, and in doing so, I was compelled to add a message of gratitude to my mother—and all parents—who make childhood feel magical and whimsical.  In keeping this piece authentic to myself and my heritage, I blended both Japanese and English: the two cultures and two languages that are crucial to who I am.

IDOLATRY
24” x 30”

Show:
Smash Showdown
Organizer: ATOC Projects, Homebody 626

--

Idolatry explores my obsession with nostalgia. I love returning to my memories, worshiping a past through objects and imagery that remind me of my childhood self. Nowhere is this more obvious than in my room.

My room is a shrine to many idols, filled with posters and art and figures and books and toys (including Smash characters of course!) that all serve as a form of comfort through familiarity. It is a shrine to a childlike purity and imagination that I know I can’t return to, but I also recognize growing older isn’t inherently bad. Growing older opens up a new world, with new people, new encounters, new relationships, and new experiences that flourish with (not against) the passage of time. Growing older means to move forward, still carrying a sense of childlike wonder.

HOUSING THE AIRSTREAM

Studio: Group Project for Technical Studio Class (Sarcophagus: Housing the Airstream w/Jason Payne

In Collaboration With: Owen Bradbury-Aranda, Charley Andrews, and Daniel Refoua for UCLA Architecture and Urban Design

--

“Taking as precedent the formal/spatial model found in early twentieth century airship hangars and their relationship to the objects they housed, this studio imagined nearly the same thing with just one difference: instead of the airship we considered the Airstream. From there, the design problem is that of a ‘hangar’ for an Airstream trailer, one that would prioritize in both form and function the life of the object within. “

TOPIARIC FINDS

Studio: Group Project for Senior Studio (Common(s) Ground w/Mariana Ibañez)

In Collaboration With: Charley Andrews and Yelena Tamrazyan for UCLA Architecture and Urban Design

--

“The Common(s) Ground Studio investigates the various forms of negotiation among individuals, the communities they belong to, and the private and public entities that regulate and participate in their spatial reality.”

Architecture exists as an ambiguous relationship between the part and the whole where reality obscures preconceived expectations. Instead of perceiving the whole, we only see fragments that then raise questions about scale, perspective, and program.

Tasked with encompassing multi-use spaces, different types of housing, and spaces to serve the community, our group created Topiaric Finds, a three floor, four million square foot structure nestled in the hills of Griffith Park.

Through this project we explore different scales of programming that reinforces the enormity of our structure, so that it’s true shape and size is left ambiguous when viewed through human perspective.
